PROJECT OVERVIEW
One of my first assignments at Studio MLM was to create a new logo for a branch of the Wisconsin Milkweed Alliance. The Kaleidoscope Center, a free community resource under the Wisconsin Milkweed Alliance, is dedicated to providing emotional support and wellness to individuals who have experienced challenges related to trauma, substance use, or other difficult life circumstances. The Center's peer supporters are trained members of the community who focus on intentional communication that is mutual, explorative, and conscious of power.
The logo for the Kaleidoscope Center encapsulates the Center's mission and values. The repeating butterfly wing pattern represents the idea of a group of butterflies, or a kaleidoscope, symbolizing the diverse community of individuals who come together to support one another at the Center. The butterfly imagery also ties into the larger organization, the Wisconsin Milkweed Alliance, which is named for the milkweed plant that is essential for the growth and development of monarch butterflies.
The choice of the butterfly as the central imagery in the logo reflects the organization's belief in the possibility of healing and recovery, as well as the focus on choice and self-determination, which are values consistent with the consumer/survivor/ex-patient movement (peer recovery movement). The logo, therefore, not only adds to the visual identity of the Kaleidoscope Center but also serves as a representation of the organization's mission and values.
